Idea Generation

Television program

During one of our sessions with Pat we carried on our study of our individual characters we made on our character sheets. Mine was 19 year old student Mollie. We did a short exercise at the beginning of the session in which we discussed whether our characters would watch a Sci-Fi/Action drama on at 7.30pm on a Saturday night titled Space Fight.

After this we then paired up and started to form an idea of a new television program which would be aired primetime on a Saturday night at 7.30pm. The program was generated from the audience of all the characters generated from the class. We had to appeal to the audience range of the fictional characters in the class.

After careful consideration of various different ideas me and my partner came up with a comedy sitcom titled Golden Shame. Our audience we aimed ours at was generally between 15-30 year olds. The synopsis of Golden Shame is that it's about a family of five. A mother, father, 18 year old son and twin children boy and girl aged 10. The family are very wealthy and they live in an expensive mansion house. They are very snobby and they look down on the poor. However their luxurious lifestyle comes to an abrupt end when the father is found out to be a tax thief so all his money is taken away and so is their house. The father is put in prison and his family are made to live in a homeless shelter.

We did some audience research with the other characters in our class and out of 18 different characters 61% said YES to saying they would watch it. Some of the comments we got suggested that they weren't interested in the synopsis and that they much prefer serious dramas. However the 61% that said YES thought that the idea was clever and would make light hearted television which is easily enjoyable. Below are the characters who said YES to watch our television show;

  • Albert 27 Male (Interested in animals, stripper)
  • Dylan 28 Male (Aggressive, involved in drug trade)
  • Abbie 30 Female (Blunt, heartless, doctor)
  • Michael 19 Male (Photography student, reserved, minimum wage)
  • Alfie 25 Male (Autistic, schizophrenic, unemployed)
  • Jessica 23 Female (Hot-headed, outspoken, singer)
  • Jarvis 26 Male (Racing driver, sporty, friendly)
  • Valerie 18 Female (Quiet, mysterious, student)
  • Lucy 22 Female (Sporty, jobless)
