Visual storytelling

Direction of movement (left to right is more reassuring for the audience). Culturally we write left to right and this is conventional and normal so the antagonist will often subconsciously be introduced from the left.

Directing the Eye - you can direct the eye to a certain subject via lighting, colours and different poignant images.

Balance - the human eye is always looking for symmetry, it is the reason why people always look out for faces in things. We search for our sense of balance and can use it to our advantage.

Orientation - people prefer to be introduced to a character in the correct way, if the character is introduced upside down then it can make them uncomfortable.

Size - angles, camera shots and different tricks, pull focus changing the size of an object.
