Developing a career plan

My Video CV

Below is a link to my Video CV and my media CV, which I put together over the course of a few weeks. The aim with the video CV is that it will be helpful for media industries to try and get a sense of who I am, as opposed to just reading about me on a sheet of paper. I wanted to make it snappy and interesting, using a variety of photos and film to narrate my personality in a minute and a half. Due to sequence settings issues, I was not able to change the settings so I couldn't put my video in full 1080p picture quality, even though that is what I filmed it on. However I will try and fix this at a later date, so that when I send it in to companies, I will have the best possible chance of coming across correctly and professionally.

During our lessons with Sam, we have been developing ourselves a career plan for the film and television industry. Helping to build up our portfolio for finding different forms of work in the industry. Below are three different job titles that have been advertised which really appeal to me.

Director

The role of the director is to control all creative aspects of a film/television production, they must be in charge of managing all the cast and crew. As well as making the creative choices of how they want the final piece to look. They direct the editors, camera operators, lighting and sound crew and many others. Showing them exactly how they want their piece of work to look. Directors must take advice off of the other crew, just so that they can get the most possible information out of them. The director also makes all the final decisions and a lot of all the work the rest of the crew do, was part of a decision of the director. Below are a few of the qualities a director must have;

  • Good leader
  • People person - work well in teams
  • Authorative
  • Quick thinking
  • Organised
  • Creative
The reason I would really love to be a director and it appeals to me so much is because I love creating things and putting into place a form of art which can be enjoyed on many different platforms. I find it really enjoyable and it is a passion of mine to lead teams of people into creating something. Making a mind map in my head of a load of shots and camera movements is also something that inspires me, I love to picture something then put it together and direct others to help me achieve a particular goal.

While doing some research I found a couple of different websites which had advertisements for directing roles going on offer. Below are the links and some details.

Because you have to be a member to apply for jobs or fully research them, I could not look at much information at all on this website. However there was a brief description. ProductionBase are advertising for a directorial role for a new primetime Channel 4 presenter-led factual entertainment show.

Below is another website I found which has an application open for a creative director, this role is similar to a normal production director as I am interested in. However the job role focuses more on special effects, CGI, motion graphics, cinematics, interaction and design. Now this job role isn't a directorial role I'd necessarily be so interested in, however all the same it is still useful to know. The skills needed for this job are that you must have a full understanding of special effects, 3D and motion graphics. As well as knowing how the interactive design can create motion pieces. The candidate applying for this job must also have expertise knowledge on programming. Being good at giving advice and being a strong leader who can give good guidance is also imperative. The candidate going for the role should also have a creative eye for motion, animation and layout. Working under pressure is also key to this job because they must be able to reach tough deadlines, while working in a busy creative studio.

Runner

A runner is a really important job role in the media production industry. Without the runner, film and television shoots would not run very smoothly and they help to ease the transition of cast and crew members. The role of a runner is to quite literally do whatever they are told, they are usually positioned in the studio and set as well as in the production office. They have to run around from the location to studio etc, collecting things and giving them to members of the cast and crew. Often they will be told to grab one of the cast members a drink or some lunch, as well as being told to get props, deliver scripts, get a part for the cameras/equipment. The runner usually works closely with the floor manager as they can give the runner instructions on what they have to do to keep their 'floor' running smoothly. The runners are given a list of things to do and timeframes in which they need doing, however they can't do all their jobs at once so they have to prioritise the importance of each job given. Runners are also often asked to do some driving, by this I mean they are asked to pick up and drop off cast and crew at different locations. As well as driving out of town to different locations to find props, pieces of equipment, scripts etc.

The reason I would be really interested in a position as a runner, even just for work experience is because it is a really great way to get your name heard and get your face out there in the industry. When I'm working, I always like to be doing something on my feet, something productive, working towards a creative piece. And as a runner you are constantly on the move and have to be alert, this is something that I could fully engage with and be passionate about. It also appeals to me because I constantly want to learn more about how film and television is produced, and this is a great way of learning more. Below is an apprenticeship opportunity I found for a running job in Sunderland. I found this position on Indeed.com

The position they are looking for is for 16-18 year olds, working hours 9am until 6pm. The company the advertisement is showing is for Media Live Productions, they are looking for someone who can be responsible for putting together a product which is suitable for broadcasting, consisting of raw material. Ideally they are asking for a candidate who has a strong passionate interest in film production, film editing, sound recording, pre and post production skills. A skill which is also required is that they must have a lot of energy, working in a team environment. Completing projects all the way from the concept stage, right up until completion. This apprenticeship is unpaid, however in terms of giving equal opportunities, the company is offering a bursary scheme to cover the costs of travel. The application process is very similar, all that needs be done is to fill in a submission form, with your name, email and number. As well as attaching your CV and a cover letter. This cover letter must explain to the company why you are right for the job and why you are excited to work for Media Live Productions.

Editor

The final job role which I have done some research on and is a role that I would be interested in is an editorial job. The role of an editor is to put together all the footage from a 'shoot' and make the product which has been filmed. E.g. a film, television show, advert, pilot etc. Basically anything filmed then has to be edited together so that it fits into the time frame given. The average time frame for an editing job for a feature length film would range from 90 to 105 minutes. The editing process is known as the post-production stage and it is overlooked heavily by the director, as he/she is the creative mind-set behind the project and they direct the editor as to how they want the tone and feel of the film. Skills required to be an editor are of course as follows;
  • Must be good at meeting deadlines
  • Have good expertise on all editing software's
  • Patient
  • Can take critique
  • Organised
  • Can multitask
The reason the role of an editor would interest me is because I really enjoy taking on as much as possible during a project, I especially love directing. But editing is also something I am passionate about. I like to piece together everything I have produced during the production stages of a production, mixing around colour grading effects and looping the sound files, as well as trimming clips to make them snappier is something I find interesting as I like to make things as exciting as possible and editing is the best way to perfect your work.

While doing some research on editorial jobs, I managed to find an advert looking for a part time/possibly full time editor job role on Mandy.com , the employer looking for the role is a company called Klein and Sons. They have specified that they are looking for someone with at least five years experience in post-production editing. Some of the skills required for this job role are, they must have extensive knowledge on all editing systems, especially Final Cut 7, if possible Adobe Premiere and Avid as well. The candidate must also know a lot about file compressions and conversions, good motion graphic skills. Having experience in lighting, sound and camera recording would also be beneficial to the role. The contract as previously briefly mentioned is a potential permanent role. The application process is very simple, just like the others. All that has to be done is to send in your CV to a email address, as well as sending across your showreel.
